How the speaking time is calculated

Speaking time = number of words ÷ speaking speed (words per minute). The default is 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations. You can also add a pause between paragraphs, for example to allow for slide changes or audience reaction.

How many words for a speech?

Work backwards from your time slot: multiply the minutes you have by your speaking speed. A 5-minute talk at 130 words per minute needs about 650 words; a 10-minute talk needs about 1,300. Leave some time for pauses, applause or questions.

How to use it

  1. Paste your script or open the file, or type a word count.
  2. Choose a pace that matches your delivery. If you know your own pace, enter it.
  3. Optionally add a pause between paragraphs, in seconds.

The best way to know your real pace is to read part of your script aloud for one minute and count the words. Enter that number as your words per minute.
