How many words are on a page?

With 1-inch margins on US Letter paper and a 12-point font, a page holds very roughly 500 words single-spaced and 250 words double-spaced. The exact number depends on the font and on how the text is laid out. These are the estimates this calculator gives:

Font (12 pt, US Letter, 1-inch margins)Single spacingDouble spacing
Times New Romanabout 520about 260
Arialabout 470about 230
Calibriabout 475about 235
Georgiaabout 475about 235
Verdanaabout 385about 190
Courier Newabout 395about 195

How the estimate is calculated

  • The usable page area is the page size minus the margins.
  • Characters per line are estimated from the average width of letters in the chosen font and size.
  • Lines per page come from the font size, the font’s normal line height and your line spacing.
  • Words per page = characters per line ÷ 6 (an average English word plus a space) × lines per page, reduced by about 20% for the short last line of each paragraph.

This is an estimate. Headings, lists, short paragraphs, images and long words all reduce the number of words per page. For an exact page count, paste the text into your word processor with the required formatting.

How to use it

  1. Enter your word count, or open the text box below the results and paste your text.
  2. Choose the font, size, line spacing, page size and margins your assignment or publisher asks for.
  3. Read the estimated number of pages and words per page.

Example

A 2,000-word essay in Times New Roman, 12 point, double-spaced with 1-inch margins fills about 2,000 ÷ 260 ≈ 7.7 pages.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced in a 12-point font such as Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.

Why is my real page count different?

Paragraph breaks, headings, quotations and spacing settings in your word processor change the layout. The calculator assumes plain paragraphs of text.

Does it support A4 paper?

Yes. Choose A4 under Page size. A4 is slightly narrower and taller than US Letter, so it holds a few more lines.

Which font fits the most words per page?

Of the fonts listed, Times New Roman fits the most because its letters are narrow. Verdana and Courier New fit the fewest.
