Reading Time Calculator
Estimate how long your text takes to read. Paste your text or enter a word count, then choose a reading speed.
How the reading time is calculated
Reading time = number of words ÷ reading speed (words per minute). The default speed is 200 words per minute, a common estimate for adults reading ordinary text on screen. Choose a preset or enter your own speed.
| Speed | Words per minute | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Slow | 150 | Technical, academic or unfamiliar material |
| Average | 200 | Blog posts, news and general reading |
| Fast | 250 | Easy, familiar text |
| Skimming | 300 | Looking for main points rather than reading every word |

| Word count | Reading time |

| 250 words | 1 min 15 sec |
| 500 words | 2 min 30 sec |
| 1,000 words | 5 min |
| 1,500 words | 7 min 30 sec |
| 2,500 words | 12 min 30 sec |
| 5,000 words | 25 min |
