What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears compared with the total number of words in a text, shown as a percentage. Writers and SEO professionals use it to check that a page is clearly about its topic without repeating the same phrase unnaturally.
How we calculate it
Density = (number of times the keyword appears ÷ total words) × 100.
- Words are compared in lowercase, and punctuation at the start or end of a word is ignored, so “Writing,” and “writing” match.
- 2-word and 3-word phrases are built from words that appear next to each other in the same sentence. Phrases that appear only once are hidden.
- With Hide common words on, single words such as “the” and “and” are skipped, along with phrases that start or end with one of them.
- The Focus keyword box counts an exact phrase and shows its density.
Example
In a 400-word article where “word counter” appears 6 times, the density of that phrase is 6 ÷ 400 × 100 = 1.5%.
What is a good keyword density?
There is no ideal percentage. Google’s guidance is to write for people and avoid “keyword stuffing”, which means repeating words unnaturally. Use this tool to spot accidental repetition and to make sure your main topic is mentioned clearly, then read the text aloud: if a phrase sounds repetitive, rephrase it.
How to use the results

- Look for words you repeat without meaning to, and replace some with synonyms.
- Switch to 2-word and 3-word phrases to see the topics your text actually covers.
- Use Download CSV to save the full list for a report.
Frequently asked questions
Does keyword density affect Google rankings?
Search engines do not publish a target density, and repeating keywords does not guarantee better rankings. Clear, helpful writing that covers the topic well matters more.
Why are common words hidden?
Words such as “the”, “of” and “and” are the most frequent in almost any English text and rarely tell you anything about the topic. Turn off “Hide common words” to include them.
Can I check a phrase, not just a single word?
Yes. Type it in the Focus keyword box, or switch to the 2-word or 3-word view.
